8 WIREMAG.COM #47 2018

Thanks to the advancements in treatment, for many the virus is no longer life threatening, but the fight against the disease is far from over. We want to share some sobering statistics from HIV.gov about the realities of HIV in the U.S and in our gay community with you: • More than 1.1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV today, and 1 in 7 of them don't know it. • In 2016, gay and bisexual men accounted for 67% (26,570) of all diagnoses and 83% of HIV diagnoses among males. • Black/African American gay and bisexual men accounted for the largest number of HIV diagnoses (10,223), followed by Hispanic/Latino (7,425) and white (7,390) gay and bisexual men. • Among all gay and bisexual men, trends have varied by race and over time. From 2011 to 2015: • Among white gay and bisexual men, diagnoses decreased 10%. • Among Hispanic/Latino gay and bisexual men, diagnoses increased 14%. • Among African American gay and bisexual men, diagnoses increased 4%. • After years of sharp increases, diagnoses among young African American gay and bisexual men (aged 13-24) stayed about the same. Make sure to rock your red ribbon on World AIDS Day and use this opportunity to raise awareness, so both the general public and government officials get reminded that the fight against HIV is not over; and that we still need to fight the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS, improve education and raise funds for a cure. Even though World AIDS Day is celebrated just once a year, we should show our support all year round. Use the hashtag #WAD2018 on social media for everything about World AIDS Day and let's all get tested regularly. For more information on World AIDS Day, visit worldaidsday.org.

orld AIDS Day is commemorated every year on December 1, so mark your calendars. This is a very important day when we join in on the fight against HIV/AIDS, support those living with the virus, and pay tribute to the precious lives we've lost. This year, the federal theme is "Know your Status." Your best line of defense against HIV/AIDS is knowledge, so getting tested and knowing your status is key. As a nation, the U.S. is in the lead when it comes to the global fight against HIV/AIDS. Back in 2004, President George W. Bush created the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), known as "the largest commitment by any nation to address a single disease in history." PEPFAR has helped in preventing millions of new HIV infections and has supplied life-saving antiretroviral treatment (ART) to over 12.9 million people, helping to turn the once fatal virus into a manageable one.

ome people regularly check out a certain kind of vacation scene: hot nightlife, hot beach action, plenty of pampering.

Other people, other times seek out something else. A place where they are intrinsically a traveler, not a tourist; where the destination doesn't fully bend to the lure of the visitor dollar and instead lets the visitor adapt to its own vibe; a place with its own sense of time and pace to which you must align yourself to appreciate. A place where, when you do attune yourself, you're suddenly appreciative of the environment around you, the way your heart slows to the steady beat of the ocean, and nightlife consisting of beer and a card game outside a local eatery, as a crimson sunset all but blinds you suddenly, sounds perfect.

It isn't just something that could come out of the Hollywood script factory or a romance novel. And one doesn't have to travel to the Greek islands or South Pacific. One doesn't have to even leave the U.S. or deal with any annoying paperwork. Welcome to St. Croix. Saint Croix is the largest (84 square miles) island of the U.S. Virgin Islands. This formerly volcanic island consists of an unusual array of spectacular beaches and mountains, rainforest, palm trees, and two historic towns – Christiansted and Frederiksted (the former being four times the size of the latter) and has a population of over 50,000 people. There are resorts here which may resemble exquisite ones elsewhere in the Caribbean. There is golf in exquisite settings, gaming, yacht club culture, and even the Cruzan Rum Distillery for fans of the fine product.

here, and an economy that unfortunately reflects that, there is something about St. Croix that perpetrates the vibe of Hemingway more than the next place to be "discovered" by a Kardashian.

You'll want to rent a car to see St. Croix. Make it a 4WD vehicle to make sure you get to see some of the more challenging topography. Where to stay? Do your research and make a tough decision. St. Croix is costly and with less competition don't waiver much. You'll find a range, but keep in mind you will be spending monStill, with fewer tourists than most Caribbean ey doing everything you do here. even restaurants. When ferry boats arrive, activity is usually at its most. Cruise ships arriving in Frederiksted really gets things rolling. Get used to it. Show interest and you will find some accommodation from locals – these are warm people. Spend some time exploring the island. The most unusual topography, a hilly rainforest, is in the northwest and is a full-on jungle complete with vines and some 4x4-only roads. Check the tidal pools at Annally Bay. North of the mountains from most of the island, the well-sheltered Cane Bay has world-class snorkeling, with abundant coral, fish, and even some sea turtles in the deeper water. The East End is remote, residential and mountainous. This end of the island gets less rain; the general lack of trees highlights the spectacular topography and provides an unobstructed ocean view. It's worth making a stop here, to feel the ocean wind (not "breeze") with such a spectacular view.

PHOTOS PROVIDED BY VISITUSVI.COM

There isn't much urban jungle to explore in either town. But what it lacks in size it makes up for in interesting. Streets are tight here, traditional windows are colorful shutters, and there is a strong local sense of arts and artisan crafts (particularly Christiansted). In markets and in shops, you will find some of the most lively products from some of the most friendly creative people you will find in the Caribbean. In these settings, the St. Croix culture works for you. Folks in St. Croix are just less jaded by giant waves of sometimes-ghastly mainland tourists. It's all just less... fussy; and more friendly. If you're smart and friendly, you will leave St. Croix with some mementos your family will treasure for decades. Check out Point Udall, the easternmost territory under the American flag and St. George Village Botanical Garden. The rest of your stay... is about the water. This isn't Kokomo. It isn't high energy disco on a platform on a beach with MTV cameras. They keep it real in St. Croix. Beaches abound; ask locals about local weather condition effects on any side of the island and remember many beaches here are turtle nesting areas. Scuba diving, snorkeling, and deep sea fishing are spectacular. Check with your hotel for recommendations or rate specials – a very good idea on St. Croix.

12 WIREMAG.COM #47 2018

Even if your own fishing excursion doesn't work out, St. Croix dining has been steadily improving and includes plenty of fine dining and quality hotel restaurants. Although there is smaller, independent and local-oriented dining too. And a night of stewed goat, roti, and Cruzan in effectively someone's dining room is the starter to the stuff of the kind of memories a place as distinct at St. Croix often makes. Michael W. CIRCUIT FESTIVAL THE WORLD'S BIGGEST By Rafa Carvajal & Michael Bustamante

iami! Get ready for a new, super hot Circuit Festival coming to town this Thanksgiving weekend. Created more than 20 years ago, Circuit Festival is made possible by Barcelona Matinée Group, and has achieved international recognition for their attendee favorite events such as La Leche! Festival, Matinée Easter Weekend, Girlie Circuit Festival and Matinée Summer Festival, and the Matinée World Tour. Many cities were considered in the search for Circuit Festival's newest party destination, and – after extensive research – our Magic City's thriving nightlife, beaches, and sexy people, motivated Circuit Festival to pair up with URGE and debut the first ever Circuit Festival in the United States, Circuit Festival Miami. The host hotel for the Festival is the Clevelander Hotel (located at 1020 Ocean Drive in Miami Beach), also the location of the Festival's Welcome Center.

Known as "the biggest international gay event," Circuit Festival Miami will take place November 22 through 26. "We are thrilled to introduce the world's biggest international gay event to the States this year," said producer Luis Morera. Get ready to party with thousands of the sexiest Circuit partygoers at four nighttime events and three daytime parties, including the iconic Beach Party – all taking place at Miami's hottest locations, with the best international DJs on the scene. According to producer Hilton Wolman, "We want everyone to know that Circuit Festival Miami will be fresh and exciting and it will help return Miami to its rightful place as the gay party capital of the U.S." Also, producer Billy Kemp reminds us that "The weather is incomparable to any city in the U.S., especially in November." There are many fantastic parties to choose from, so make sure you peruse through our Circuit Festival Miami Events Guide for all the details about the Circuit Festival Miami 2018 week. By supporting the Festival you also help our community because a portion of all proceeds will benefit Miami Beach Pride, a not-for-profit organization that "produces free, safe, quality mass-appeal events that are open to all, and that include the Parade, Festival, Expo, and adjunct, officially sanctioned Miami Beach Gay Pride events." For more information and to purchase tickets, visit circuitfestival.net/miami. Keep in mind that passes are the least expensive and most efficient way to attend the events.

Rafa Carvajal: What are you looking forward to the most about DJing at this year's Circuit Festival Miami? DJ Isaac Escalante: I think all parties are going to be different, all kinds of music, and I'm looking forward to seeing the new venues. The producers are doing an amazing job with the promotion and people from all over the world are coming to this first edition of Circuit Festival Miami. DJ GSP: Being a resident DJ for Circuit in the last two years, I've experienced the excellence in putting out gay events. The same quality every time I've played in Miami in the past (White Party, Winter Party, Miami Beach Gay Pride, and Score). This Festival is going to set another whole new level of gay partying. I'm really looking forward to an excellent gay festival, and I have really missed DJing in Miami. So, I'm really excited. DJ Hansell Leyva: I am super excited for the debut of Circuit Festival Miami, and to have the opportunity to play at Club Space "The Terrace" for the festival. A dream come true! DJ Tom Stephan: Circuit Festival is always one of the highlights of my DJ year, so I'm all for doing it more than once!

"LIKE BARCELONA, MIAMI HAS THE BEACH AND THE SUNSHINE, WHICH REALLY MAKES THIS MORE THAN JUST A CIRCUIT PARTY, BUT A HOLIDAY WEEKEND. ALSO, MIAMI HAS SOME OF THE BEST NIGHTCLUBS AND SOUND SYSTEMS!" - DJ TOM STEPHAN

RC: Why is Miami the perfect place to host this Circuit Festival? DJIE: Hot weather and lots of flavor from all over the world. DJG: Miami has a great reputation when it comes to gay festivals, and I think it is the place to be for Circuit Festival to debut in the U.S. Keeping its tradition of being one of the best gay festivals worldwide. DJHL: Miami is always the "spot." DJTS: Like Barcelona, Miami has the beach and the sunshine, which really makes this more than just a circuit party, but a holiday weekend. Also, Miami has some of the best nightclubs and sound systems! 16 WIREMAG.COM #47 2018

RC: What kind of sets are you planning to DJ? DJIE: I'm playing one set. I'm producing new tracks to be played especially that night, so I'm very excited for my set and to see the reaction of the crowd with these new tracks. DJG: I will keep my style, which is very happy and uplifting. But, I will also add the cha-cha style of Miami. At the end of the day, I want to make everyone on the dance floor happy! DJHL: Each set is a different journey depending on the venue and crowd. I will prepare a special set for this special occasion. I can't wait to see everyone! See you on the dance floor. DJTS: The Pervert party is the darker, more tech side of Circuit, and that's the sexiest, most exciting music to me.

ARTS NEWSIE By Rafa Carvajal

THE KING AND I "I PLAY KING MONGKUT, THE KING OF SIAM. HE WAS A BRILLIANT, INQUISITIVE, CURIOUS MAN WHO LED AN INCREDIBLE LIFE."

he first time I saw The King and I, I was a young cadet at the United States Coast Guard Academy on a class arts & culture road trip to the Hartford, Connecticut Opera House. I will always treasure the memories of that night because I saw Yul Brynner play the King, and it was my introduction to Broadway musicals – which I have loved ever since. I went to see Rodgers & Hammerstein's The King and I again last year at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and it brought back wonderful memories. I am going to see the show again when the winner of four Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival, returns to the Broward Center premiering on November 20 and entertaining South Florida audiences through December 2, as part of the Broadway in Fort Lauderdale subscription series. 20 WIREMAG.COM #47 2018

This beloved musical is set in Bangkok back in the 1860s and focuses on the King of Siam and his relationship with Anna Leonowens, an English widow summoned to serve as tutor to his many children and wives. During The King and I you will love listening to classics such as "Getting To Know You," "I Whistle a Happy Tune," "Hello Young Lovers," "Shall We Dance" and "Something Wonderful." Tickets to The King and I can be purchased by visiting browardcenter.org or by calling 954.462.0222. I caught up with Pedro Ka'awaloa to discuss his role as King Mongkut, what brought him to the show, and why he thinks The King and I is a must-see production. Rafa Carvajal: Please tell our Wire Magazine readers about your role in The King and I? Pedro Ka'awaloa: I play King Mongkut, the King of Siam. He was a brilliant, inquisitive, curious man who led an incredible life. He was a Buddhist monk for 26 years before becoming the King. He prized education and science above all and is called "The Father of Science and Technology" by some. RC: What attracted you to this role?

- PEDRO KA'AWALOA

RC: As a graduate of Harvard Business School, I would like to ask you how did your training at Harvard University benefit you in this role? PK: I'm actually a graduate of the Harvard University Faculty of Arts and Sciences. I started in astrophysics but changed to music. I think my passion for music shows through in the hugely challenging piece "A Puzzlement," which is really my only solo song. I did spend a lot of my time in college doing musical theater, though, and I am grateful that I continually had the opportunity to ply my craft as often as I did in college. I worked quite a bit with the Harvard and Radcliffe Gilbert & Sullivan Players. RC: Tell our readers about The King and I. PK: It's about a king who was charged with maintaining Siam's (now Thailand) independence in a period of Western colonialism. King Mongkut hires Anna to educate his children. What results is a clash of cultures, in an attempt to preserve Siam in this period. In addition, The King and I empowers women not only through Anna, Lady Thiang, and Tuptim, but also through King Mongkut's insistence on education instilling power. The story urges us all to speak out, but also to listen just as strongly as we talk.

PHOTO BY JEREMY DANIEL. PROVIDED BY BROADWAY ACROSS AMERICA

PK: I think the King is a complex and deep character based on a historically influential man. I enjoy telling his story every night. I love to discover not who the man was in reality, but who he is in the world of the play, and how he interacts with everyone else. I think it is easy to fall into a two-dimensional caricature with the King, and I love the challenge of delving into all the nooks and crannies of who he is. Every performance is an opportunity to discover something new about him.

"THIS SHOW IS ABOUT UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATING EACH OTHER AND DISCOVERING HOW WE CAN MOVE FORWARD IN UNITY." - PEDRO KA'AWALOA

RC: How does this role compare with others you have played in your career? PK: This is hands down the most complex role, because of the writing. The shifting of grammar as an attempt to evoke a foreign feel without writing anything in another language proves quite a challenge. This doesn't diminish the amount of subtext, though, and Hammerstein does an incredible job with the book. It is a testament to his skill. I am constantly looking for more subtlety and more ways to approach the text every night. I love that I can go on a journey with the King every night. I strive to find the nuance that is needed to bring the King's humanity to the forefront.

RC: What's your favorite part of The King and I? PK: I absolutely adore the music of this show. There are so many beautiful melodies, which are only rivaled by the brilliance of the lyrics. The ballet is progressive as well; it is mind-boggling to think that this was written over 50 years ago. I think my favorite moment in the show is in the final scene, as the King focuses his attention on ensuring RC: What will audience members enjoy the the survival of the kingdom in Prince Chulalongkorn, his son. most from this iconic show? Remixed By DJ FR8-O

hanksgiving is typically the time of year when we show our gratitude for all of the good things we have in our lives; our health, our loved ones, our homes. All those things are important, but there's something else we in the LGBTQ community should be thankful for – remixes! Think about it. Without these lovely little creations our dance floors, gym routines, and road trips would get pretty boring, wouldn't they? So while you're stuffing your bellies with turkey, yams and "carb-free" mashed potatoes this Thanksgiving, feast your ears on these delicious new reimaginings of some of your favorite tracks. 24 WIREMAG.COM #47 2018

T.G.I.

"ALL FOR YOU" (SMOKIN' JACK HILL'S YELLOW SMILEY FACE REMIX) - YEARS & YEARS These young Brits have definitely been making the rounds in clubs worldwide, since the summer release of their dance-centric album Palo Santo. Smokin Jack Hill takes this track a step further, giving it a classic house vibe made just for all of us. "ALL I AM" (THRDL!FE REMIX) - JESS GLYNNE Since her flawless performance on Clean Bandit's 2014 hit "Rather Be," Jess has been a very busy girl. With the recent roll-out of her second album, she's giving us more dance anthems than a Pride parade. THRDL!FE gives this single the late-night treatment for when you want to keep the party going long after the sun comes up. "ELECTRICITY" (DAHAUZ FUTURE BOOTLEG) - DUA LIPA She's quickly showing the haters she's no one-hit-wonder, and this track is just the latest in her growing catalog of anthems. Not that the original needed much tampering, but Dahauz manages to kick it up a notch without f*cking it up.

"GINGER" (TODD TERRY REMIX) - RITON & KAH-LO Anyone who knows me knows my weakness for a hot ginger. Even though I don't think that's the kind of ginger Riton & Kah-lo are referring to, I'm still obsessed with Todd Terry's gritty remix of this track. The addictive hook mashed with Todd's hard house beats make me sweat just as much as the real thing would. "MISSING U" (WEISS REMIX) - ROBYN She's been gone way too long, so it's only fitting that she chose this track as her first single. While her new album is nothing less than sublime electropop perfection, Weiss's rendition gives this song the "bigroom" feel it needs, so that we're no longer dancing on our own. "JUST ABOUT" (KIDEKO REMIX) - TEN VEN Nothing turns a dance floor out more than a diva who's had enough. If you haven't heard of Ten Ven yet, you'll be hearing a lot more from them soon. Kideko gives this pissed off diva the perfect platform to lose her mind while we do the same on the dance floor. "LOVE SENSATION" (RALPHI ROSARIO CLUB MIX) - SUSU BOBIEN It's not easy to cover a voice as iconic as Loleatta Holloway's, but Susu has flawlessly breathed new life into this 1980 anthem. And where there's a diva, there's Ralphi Rosario to spotlight her voice in the brightest way possible; with just enough disco sprinkled with a touch of tribal house. "RUIN MY LIFE" (FUTOSE REMIX) - ZARA LARSSON She's the busiest 20-year-old in the music biz right now, and her life is about to get crazier with a new album in the works. Although the original mix might be a little too laidback for the club, this house mix is just what you need to ruin those new shoes on the dance floor.
