I also interviewed Michael to discuss his experience as a fashion designer, his work with Tommy Hilfiger and Donna Karan, and how he transitioned into costume design and styling. It was a pleasure working with both Michael and David for this issue. Michael also told me: "I hope that my story might encourage someone who has thought about changing careers, or lost their job to embrace change, welcome newness, and be courageous to try something new." I interviewed CRYSTAL performer, and former professional figure skater Shawn Sawyer to preview this exceptional ice experience. Shawn is the 2011 Canadian figure skating national silver medalist and a three-time Canadian national bronze medalist. If you are registered with no party affiliation and want to vote in the primary elections, you must update your voter registration no later than July 30, so you can vote in the August 28 primary elections. You can also request an absentee ballot if you prefer to cast your vote by mail.

DNCE - PEOPLE TO PEOPLE Nick isn't the only Jonas brother who's been busy since those boys became men. In case you didn't know, for the last three years, middle bro Joe has been playing front man for another band – the quirky quartet DNCE. Their debut EP Swaay had us eating "Cake by the Ocean," but their latest compilation is the perfect soundtrack for a lazy afternoon in bed, curled up with a different kind of cake and nothing on but the AC. DRAX PROJECT - NOON After a scan through these tracks, you would never think that these guys started out as a jazz band, but that's exactly how Sam Thomson, Shaan Singh, Matt Beachen and Ben O'Leary were formed while playing on street corners in New Zealand. Their latest EP, which includes the Platinum-certified hit "Woke Up Late," is a far cry from the good old days for these Kiwis. The breezy R&B vibe of this collection transitions from a relaxing day on the sand with "Prefer" and "Sidebit" to a sunset party with "Only Us" and "Toto." Pop this one in your playlist and you definitely won't feel like you're in Kansas anymore. ST. LUCIA - A BRIGHTER LOVE / PARADISE IS WAITING A whole year has gone by since this synthpop sensation has unleashed any new material, but their latest is definitely worth the wait. or this week's Wire Magazine Fashion & Style cover story, we present you the arresting Matador costume design and styling of fashion designer Michael Sui, through the lens of famed photographer David Vance. I also interviewed Michael to learn more about his experience as a fashion designer, his work with Tommy Hilfiger and Donna Karan, and his costume design and styling talents. Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers about your experience in the fashion industry. Michael Sui: I have been very fortunate to have had a long career in New York City as a fashion designer after graduating from Parsons School of Design. The fashion industry was the second most important employer for New York after Wall Street back in the day. I learned my craft from the bottom up, picking up pins, and spending late nights designing and sketching nonstop for big fashion houses like Anne Klein, Donna Karan (DKNY) and Tommy Hilfiger. It was hard work, fun work, paying my dues. RC: What was it like working with Tommy Hilfiger and Donna Karan? MS: Great question. Each designer that I had the honor of working with had their special talents and gifts. I will say both Donna Karan and Tommy Hilfiger were very generous. Tommy was always very polite and remembered your name every time. He exposed me to the commercial side of the fashion business. Donna Karan was more of a mother figure who took you under her wing and once you proved yourself, you became part of her family. She encouraged me to design without fear and just go for it!

RC: Why did you decide to pursue a career in fashion? MS: Honestly, it was the movie Mahogany with Diana Ross that inspired me to leave Baltimore, MD. I headed north to NYC to become a fashion designer and live what I thought would be an instant glamorous life – but you need lots of money for that – which I learned really fast! The energy of NYC was calling me. RC: How did you transition from working in fashion to becoming a costume designer and stylist? MS: Around 2012, there were changes happening at DKNY and the division I was working on was closing. There I was, after many years at DKNY… unemployed! I decided to attend night school at The New School for Costume Design. Needless to say I was scared, but I had a wonderful teacher, Mimi Maxmen. She believed in me and encouraged me to continue my studies and work as an assistant doing anything with designers in theatre, film, etc. "Just work," she said, "Keep busy." I learned how to be creative again. To enjoy the research process and read scripts. I was having fun again. Designing with a renewed vision and spirit. Styling work is really a combination of both fashion and costume history, so I utilize all of my talents. RC: What do you enjoy the most about working as a costume designer and stylist? MS: Working as a costume designer and stylist gives me the opportunity to really develop characters, solve problems, and create from the heart. I also love meeting new people and working on different sets and productions. In fashion, it's always the same people every collection.

RC: Describe your costume designing in three words. MS: Thoughtful and classic, with a twist of glamorous. I didn't say I could count, ha-ha. RC: Tell our readers something they may not know about working in costume design. MS: The hours are long on set or location. But, seeing your name and credit onscreen is so worth it. There is a sense of pride. RC: How did your collaboration with David Vance come about? MS: I became a fan of David's work online, through social media and I am sure I sneaked a peak at his many brilliant books at Rizzoli Bookstore. One day, I sent David an email as a fan and also an artist who wanted to collaborate with him. I had never really done this before, so I was honored and thrilled to hear from David inviting me to shoot with him. His work had that "it" factor that I related to and admired. We hit it off immediately, because we share the same taste in all things beautiful. We love to create and we bring out the best in each other. Since that first letter, we have worked together on several shoots. RC: Where do you draw the inspiration for your costume designing? MS: There are two different approaches that I have for designing for film or theatre, versus designing for a styling photo shoot. For film or theatre, it is always the vision of the director/ actor that you are aiming to please first. Inspiration can come from a photo, swatch of fabric, color reference, or it's a gut instinct you just have and you go for it. With my styling, I like to create visual pieces that are bold, elegant and have a touch of Swarovski crystals. OK, a lot of crystals! Swarovski crystals are my go to choice for embellishing my vintage pieces. RC: What does it take to be a successful costume designer? MS: Drive, determination, working knowledge of the industry, a sense of humor, kindness, patience, and a can of whoop-ass when needed! RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? MS: Thank you, Rafa, for giving me the opportunity to share my thoughts with you and your readers. This new show will push Cirque's boundaries with astounding ice skating and acrobatic performances that have never been seen before throughout the company's 34-year history – including synchronized skating, freestyle figure skating and extreme skating. The show will also feature traditional classic Cirque du Soleil circus acts such as the swinging trapeze, aerial traps and hand to hand. I sat down with CRYSTAL performer Shawn Sawyer to preview this exceptional ice experience and discuss what audiences should expect from Cirque du Soleil during its upcoming South Florida visit. Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers about CRYSTAL's main character. Shawn Sawyer: Crystal is a fictional character that goes through life's difficulties and obstacles while finding her true self within herself. She brings us along her surreal journey in a world of her own imagination, where everything slows down and fiction becomes her reality for a quick moment. RC: Tell our readers about your role in CRYSTAL. SS: I have the honor of playing different roles in CRYSTAL. We revolve around the main character, Crystal, throughout her journey and play different characters. The favorite character I get to play is a business man breaking out from his everyday routine. I really get to express my own unique personality and showcase some of my tricks. RC: How is your role as a performer in CRYSTAL different than other Cirque shows you've been a part of? SS: This is my first experience as a Cirque du Soleil performer, so I can only compare this experience to other professional skating shows I've been involved in. CRYSTAL has a very distinct storyline that allows every performer to be part of the narrative throughout the different scenes. RC: How did you prepare to perform in CRYSTAL? SS: I prepared for many months prior to stepping on the ice with this production. Getting myself stronger physically and letting myself free during various acting classes. I had to transform from an Olympic athlete to a circus artist. RC: What is your training and practice routine for this show? SS: My training routine involves a lot of ice time and off-ice training. I must keep myself in top shape in order to perform up to 300 shows per year. Personally, my flexibility and my core strength are my priority when it comes to most of my training.

RC: What would you tell to anyone interested in becoming a Cirque du Soleil performer? SS: A good tip for everyone wanting to become a Cirque du Soleil performer is to find what makes you special and unique so you can thrive on those assets. Stay creative and learn how to become the best possible version of yourself while performing. You need to love your craft and share that love and passion with the audience. RC: What is the best part of your job as a Cirque du Soleil performer? SS: The best part of my job as a Cirque performer is getting to perform in front of a different audience every day. I truly consider myself a born performer, so to me, it is the best way to share my passion and unique talent. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers about the show? SS: Being part of this production allows me to perform as a character and as myself. CRYSTAL has allowed me to grow not only as a performer, but also as a person. I've made the transition from athlete to artist, and I keep growing and learning every time I am on stage.
