PUBLISHER’S CORNER TELL DONALD J. TRUMP “YOU'RE FIRED!” ON NOVEMBER 3RD. The United States is my home. I learned democratic principles at a very early age growing up in Costa Rica, known around the world as an example of democracy, peace and good education. My core values from my beloved parents were reinforced at Saint Francis High School, where we were taught to follow the example and deeds of Saint Francis of Assisi. I came to the United States as a very young man to attend the United States Coast Guard Academy. I graduated with high honors from the Academy, where I learned and practiced what “Honor, Duty and Country” truly means. I also earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and became a successful businessman. This week, I want to tell you why Donald J. Trump must be voted out and fired on November 3. Trump lied, made numerous false promises he never delivered on, ignored a very contagious and deadly COVID-19 virus, put millions of our fellow citizens and small business owners out of work, ran up the national debt to record high levels, never built a wall, never put forward a healthcare plan, never released his taxes as promised, was played like a fiddle by the North Korean dictator, alienated our allies – and the list of failures goes on and on. Trump lies a lot, tweets a lot, comes to his office to work late mornings, and golfs a lot – instead of working hard like you and I do. Trump certainly doesn’t hire the best people since several of the individuals he hired to work for him and us are now convicted criminals. Trump insults, mistreats and belittles women, and has implemented several policies that have discriminated against our LGBTQ community. Trump also hurriedly replaced Ruth Bader Ginsburg with a Supreme Court Justice opposed to gay marriage and a woman’s right to choose. Incompetence, poor performance, lies, laziness, false promises, and obvious lack of any moral compass are getting America’s Chief Executive FIRED just like any other incompetent, poor performing CEO gets fired. Donald Trump is not qualified to run a Fortune 500 company, and no board of directors of any company would ever hire him to do so. Trump is definitely not qualified to run the United States of America and has the failures, terrible performance and record infections and deaths from COVID-19 to prove it! Tell Donald J. Trump “You’re Fired!” on November 3rd. The Donald’s time as an apprentice for the presidency of the United States has come to an end. Best regards,

DAVID LEDDICK’S NEW BOOK IS NAUGHTY BUT NEEDED Kindle or print to order as a paperback. After reading David’s book, I sat down with him to chat about this new work, why he wrote it and what advice he wants to share with his readers. Check out what David had to say. Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers what your new book How To Be F***able at 90 is about. David Leddick: My new book is about how to be interesting and sexy to a potential lover, no matter your age. I have found that making yourself a real partner in someone else’s life is possible considering all the many aspects there is to it, including sexual. It is based on my own life experience. It is not just theory. RC: Why should our readers purchase and read your new book? DL: I think anyone, male or female, who at the present time does not have a love interest in their life and would like one should be interested. Should they not want one, that is another story. And who is that, please? RC: What do you think people will enjoy the most about your book? DL: My book is not theoretical. It is based on regular diaries plus direct social as well as sexual advice. If you want to be captivating, this is where you start.

My office phone rang a couple of weeks ago and the voice on the other side was writer David Leddick, calling to tell me about his new book How To Be F***able at 90. I must say the title did catch my attention. David is known worldwide for his novels and art books, including the Lambda Award-winning The Male Nude. In his new and 40th book David offers tips on how to be “sexually astute,” but he also puts an emphasis on all the other aspects of your life, from your physical attributes to your mental frame, and encourages the reader to combine them to make you physically desirable as both a bedmate and a social companion. David's book is available on Amazon’s 8 WIREMAG.COM #13 2020

RC: Share with us one piece of advice from your book, as a preview of what our readers will learn from reading it. DL: I think the quote “Self-confidence comes from relishing what you are doing.” In this book I tell the reader to only think about what they think of others. What they think of you is not something to consider. The more of a cliché you are the more they will like you. Money, famous, etc. What is most important is their initial reaction to you. The better you look the better they will like you. They’ll find out about you later. RC: What inspired you to write this book? DL: I had a lover at 90 who liked me fine. I thought if I can do this I should share it with others. I have a friend of 47 who got a lot out of reading about my life experience. I think almost all ages will and can.

RC: Why are you such a prolific writer? DL: I think I am a prolific writer because although I have been around 90 years it has given me a lot to think about, rather than wearing me out. OUT & ABOUT By Rafa Carvajal

35TH ANNUAL FORT LAUDERDALE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL visit fliff.com to check out the complete listing of films, events and venues for this year’s Festival. FLIFF kicks off with the premiere of director George Gallo’s comedy The Comeback Trail, starring Academy Award winning actors Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones, plus Golden Globe nominated actor Zach Braff from Scrubs. This year, FLIFF will present a plethora of comedies, plus a variety of great dramas and captivating documentaries. One such documentary is Beethoven in Beijing. Wire Magazine sat down with co-director and screenwriter Jennifer Lin to preview this very engaging film. Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers why they must see this beautiful documentary being shown at this year's Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. Jennifer Lin: Beethoven in Beijing will take you places you’ve never been. We time-travel into the past, when the United States and China were enemies and separated by a bamboo curtain, and fast forward to the present with unprecedented access to a great American orchestra on tour in China and at home in Philadelphia.

Film lovers rejoice! The 35th Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF), taking place November 5-22, will premier over 170 American Indie and international narrative features, documentaries and short films representing 37 countries. As explained by Gregory von Hausch, President and CEO of FLIFF, “If there has been a silver-lining to come out of the COVID pandemic, it has made us more resourceful and creative. This year, FLIFF has come up with some clever ways to bring the community together yet maintain safety precautions and social distancing. I think our film selections and events will be a welcome diversion for everyone.” You can 10 WIREMAG.COM #13 2020

RC: What motivated you and your co-director to direct Beethoven in Beijing? JL: I can trace the origins of this film to 2008, when I was a reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer and sent to China to cover the Philadelphia Orchestra on tour. The orchestra was celebrating the 35th anniversary of its historic 1973 tour of China as the first American orchestra in the People’s Republic. Two things struck me: the popularity of classical music at the time, particularly among middle-class urban families in China; and the deep connection Chinese audiences had with the Philadelphia Orchestra because of its history as a trailblazer. I wrote my articles for the newspaper, but always felt that this was a story that should be seen and heard, not just read. Photo credit: © depositphotos.com | maxxyustas

RC: How did the 1973 dispatch of the iconic Philadelphia Orchestra to China by President Nixon change the course of history and music in China? JL: The Philadelphia musicians went to China as “cultural ambassadors” to win over the Chinese public after years of isolation between the U.S. and China. It worked. That visit helped to soften perceptions on both sides that had hardened after decades of hostility. Because of that tour, the Philadelphia Orchestra remains a household name in China, and retains a special place in the history of U.S.-China relations. From a music standpoint, the 1973 tour came during the Cultural Revolution, when musicians were not allowed to perform western music. My cousin was a pianist living in Shanghai at the time and told me about attending one of the concerts. She said hearing the Philadelphia Orchestra perform the forbidden music of Beethoven was like taking a long drink of water in the desert. For some people like composer Tan Dun, it was the first time he heard Beethoven. The experience, he tells us in the film, was transformative.

RC: What is this documentary really about? JL: While there is much that divides the United States and China – pandemic finger-pointing, trade tension, national security flare-ups – music connects us and the legacy of the Philadelphia Orchestra shows how that is as true today as it was in 1973. RC: What will cinephiles who watch Beethoven in Beijing find most inspiring about your documentary? JL: The sweep of history, told through a combination of archival imagery, engaging stories and backstage access to a great American orchestra. RC: What is your favorite part of Beethoven in Beijing? JL: The “fly on the wall” moments between musicians, such as eavesdropping on pianist Lang Lang going over rehearsal notes with conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, or composer Peng Peng talking with assistant conductor Kensho Watanabe about the interpretation of his symphony, which the orchestra performed in Philadelphia. Photo credit: © stockphotosecrets.com

RC: Describe Beethoven in Beijing in three words. JL: Music connects us. RC: What was the most important lesson that you learned during the production of Beethoven in Beijing? JL: I’m a journalist making a transition to filmmaking. I realized the difference between the spoken word and the visual telling of a story. What works on paper doesn’t always translate onto the screen. RC: Why do you think classical music has the power to influence minds and change the course of history? JL: I wrote a companion book to the documentary and Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin wrote in a foreword for me how music is an equalizing force that gives voice to ideas and emotions that words alone cannot. That’s the secret power of classical music. RC: What is it about classical music that can bring people and cultures together in such a remarkable way? JL: It is a universal language that connects us. Sounds Pollyanna-ish, but it’s true. I’ll never forget listening to Beethoven’s Ninth at Beijing’s stunning National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the NCPA chorus. I get chills just thinking about it. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers about Beethoven in Beijing or your role as its co-director? JL: See the movie! #13 2020 WIREMAG.COM 11

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Rob Anderson

BEAUTY HISNESS: WHY MORE MEN ARE WEARING MAKEUP His answer to that is Alpha Male’s Anti-aging BB Cream. Available in five shades and made with aloe and SPF. It is part make-up, part skin-care, working to calm the skin and protect it from the sun to avoid premature skin aging and darkening while providing sheer, radiant coverage. Since launching Alpha Male Cosmetics five years ago, the men’s beauty market has changed dramatically. Lopez points to social media as the driving force. "Everyone is looking to pull off that flawless look, and many guys are no longer trying to hide the make-up. They’re making a statement in make-up!” As the demand from men has grown, so has the line. The Alpha Male Cosmetics collection now includes foundations, primer, liquid concealers and setting spray. The liquid foundations and liquid concealers come in 24 shades, more than any other male brand in the market.

Anttoni Lopez. Photo by Jono Photography. Makeup by Asmik Mamyan. Hair by Jasmine Mamyan

Foundation, concealer, a little eyeliner… More and more men are applying makeup on a daily basis. The first time Anttoni Lopez tried painting his face was five years ago, as a way to cover up marks and bruises he had from an abusive relationship. He turned to over-the-counter products that were readily available in his pharmacy; brands like Revlon, Covergirl and Fenty. What he found is that they were heavy, cakey, and, worst of all, noticeable. “Like most guys at the time, I didn't want people to know I was wearing makeup,” he says. Another byproduct of the coverup: his face became irritated and broke out. “I started to pay more attention to the contents listed on the labels and discovered that certain ingredients commonly used in all were suitable for women, but likely to cause blotches in men.” He looked for a line of cosmetics that were made specifically for men, but at the time, none existed, so he set out to make one himself. His brand, Alpha Male Cosmetics, is more subtle and much lighter than make-up made for women. It is water-based, so simple soap and water will work perfectly to wipe it away. It also addresses conditions that are unique to men’s tougher skin, often damaged from harsh soaps, shaving and the sun. “Applying a blade to our face, once or sometimes even two times a day, leaves many of us with razor bumps, ingrown hairs and dark spots,” Lopez explains. 20 WIREMAG.COM #13 2020

“When I first launched Alpha Male five years ago, the morning grooming routine for most men was shampoo, shave and maybe a bit of hair gel. Guys are taking much better care of themselves these days. They want to feel and look good.” For men who want to give make-up a try but maintain a natural look, Lopez advises concealers should be no more than one shade lighter than true skin color. To find the shade that works best for you, he recommends trying the sample packs first. You can purchase your favorite Alpha Male Cosmetics at alphamalecosmetics.com, and you can follow them on Instagram and Facebook @ alphamalecosmetics.

R HOUSE RE-EMERGES

WITH FLAVORFUL NEW MENU AND COCKTAIL OFFERINGS and swiss cheese, served on Zak The Baker bread; or the Angus Burger topped with shredded pork, swiss cheese, and chipotle BBQ served on a brioche bun. The Large Plates offer a nice mix of Latin-inspired dishes like Short Rib Ropa Vieja with roasted red pepper sauce and maduros; and Moqueca, a modern version of the traditional Brazilian seafood stew made with local fish, Florida shrimp, scallops, ginger, coconut milk, tomatoes, and peppers. For a decadent dessert, indulge in the Passionfruit Tres Leches; or Rainbow Churros with spiced liquid chocolate.

Photos by Dan Kocsis

This week, I am happy to inform you that R House has re-emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic mandated closures and restrictions refreshed with a new Latin-inspired menu and delightful new cocktails based on the vivacious flavors of Miami. According to executive chef/owner Rocco Carulli. “We used this time wisely to revive our menu and iron out entertainment protocol so needless to say we’re ecstatic to be seating customers again, and grateful for this chance to elevate all aspects of R House.”

Rocco also revamped R House’s very popular weekend Drag brunch offerings with such delights as Bomba Rice Veggie Bowl, with butternut squash, cauliflower, mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, and peppers; R Cuban Breakfast with scrambled eggs, moros y cristianos, and tostones; and Avocado Toast served with bacon, fried egg, and garlic mushrooms. Be sure to liven up your brunch or dinner experience with some of the novel cocktails developed by El Tucan/Marion alumnus Jose Romero. From the Latin Classics, La Reina Margarita with fresh avocado muddled with jalapeño, mint, a pinch of salt, and Ancho Reyes chile liqueur; or Un Cafecito Por Favor, a Cuban play on an espresso martini based on Cuban coffee shaken with Stoli Vanilla vodka and Kahlua served straight up, will definitely make you cheer.
