Let’s get this out of the way right from the beginning: I thoroughly enjoyed this film! It’s fun, as only Eddie Murphy can deliver it. It’s nostalgic, conjuring up the magic the first film brought to us back in the late 80’s, and it sticks to its original themes of love, family and tradition. It’s still the acceptable Cinderella story for our modern times.

Prince Akeem (Murphy) is now the newly crowned king of the lush, rich, and royal African country of Zamunda. Before dying, his father (Jones) charged him with passing the throne on to a male heir, even though Akeem has only spawned three beautiful princesses. PUBLISHER’S CORNER STAY THE COURSE AND BE RESOLUTE Like so many residents of Miami Beach and Miami, and law abiding tourists visiting the Beach, I am outraged and horrified by the abhorrent and disgusting behavior of certain ‘tourists’ currently visiting our hometown. Their total disregard for our laws and the spread of the COVID-19 virus is completely unacceptable and shows a sense of entitlement and disrespect for our City, its residents and other tourists which is impossible to comprehend. I fully support the City’s measures to bring this out of control mayhem to a stop as expeditiously as possible. The people doing whatever they want, whenever they want are trashing our City, filling our beaches with garbage and endangering our peace and security. They are definitely not welcome, and I hope we get rid of them as soon as possible. No city or town wants, nor would tolerate, lawless crowds invading their streets and neighborhoods and trashing parts of them. I also wonder who these people are and what education did they receive from their parents and schools. How can anyone think that what we see in videos on social media and on the news could in any way shape or form be acceptable? We want and deserve to get the Beach back from anything goes delinquents, infringing on the rights of citizens who want to live or vacation on the Beach in peace. Enough is enough! Go back to where you came from and take your repugnant behavior with you. You are not welcome in Miami Beach. I also want to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to stay the course in following all COVID-19 safety protocols and preventive measures. I know we are all tired from this pandemic, but there is now definitely a light at the end of the tunnel – as millions of Americans get vaccinated. Get the vaccine when you are able to. It could save your life or prevent you from getting very ill. I was very fortunate to receive my first dose of the Moderna vaccine and will be receiving my second one next week. I had some minor side effects that included headaches and a sore arm at the injection site for a few days. I look forward to the day, soon, when I will see my family and friends in person and give them big hugs and kisses without having to worry about endangering their health or transmitting a potentially deadly virus. In this week’s issue, we interview Venezuelan cover model Santiago Garcia, featuring some hot photos taken by Photo Studio Miami. In Arts & Culture, we preview the upcoming 23rd annual OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Miami edition, which will be showing over 80 films from around the world. In Flix, film critic Alyn Darnay explains why he thoroughly enjoyed Coming 2 America, and Out & About features photos of Love My DJ Fridays at TWIST with DJ Sushiman. Rafa Carvajal: Where are you originally from and where do you live? Santiago Garcia: I’m from Venezuela born and raised. Currently, I live on Miami Beach. RC: What do you do for work? SG: I work mostly on myself. I’ve never been greedy for money, but I’m a hustler at heart. I do gigs part-time as a waiter/ bartender. RC: How do you stay in shape? SG: Lift, dance and play. RC: What are your top three favorite exercises? SG: Skateboarding/biking, sex and making TikTok, lol.

#3 2021 WIREMAG.COM 13

RC: What is the most important fitness tip that you would recommend to our readers? SG: Having good eating habits is my main recommendation. I believe that 70% of your fitness is diet, and 30% is having a good fitness routine. RC: Describe yourself in three words. SG: Spicy, crazy, creative. RC: What are your favorite foods? SG: Anything Venezuelan and d#@k. RC: Who is the person that inspires you the most? Why? SG: I was gonna say my mom, but after responding d#@k to the last question, I’m second guessing, lol. 100% my mom. She’s a strong independent woman, authentic, positive and a bad bitch, who raised two children on her own, never failing to provide for the kids. I get my hustle from her. RC: What do you enjoy the most about modeling for photos? SG: I enjoy modeling because it allows me to show the different sides of myself through art captured by the lens of another artist. Also, it allows me to embody different personalities and characters. RC: What are your favorite hobbies? SG: Dancing, creating artistic and unique content, styling. RC: What is your biggest dream that you want to achieve? SG: Win an Oscar for the baddest bitch on Earth.

14 WIREMAG.COM #3 2021

RC: How has the current COVID-19 pandemic affected your personal and professional life? SG: I believe COVID has brought both negative and positive things to my life. It brought a lot of uncertainty to my professional life, which caused me a lot of anxiety at first. I felt like I was on pause for a long time, but these were the times we were living in. Personally, it made me realize the importance of family and friends, which are always number one. RC: What is your current struggle? SG: Just one? Lol. I would definitely have to say worrying less about what people think and more about what makes me happy. We are almost there boo.

#3 2021 WIREMAG.COM 15

RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? SG: Be you, do you. Don’t pay no mind to what people have to say about you. Because imagine spending the limited amount of time we have on this Earth worrying about what people think about us. Do what makes YOU happy!

23RD ANNUAL OUTSHINE LGBTQ+ FILM FESTIVAL MIAMI EDITION If you like LGBTQ+ films, the 23rd annual OUTshine Film Festival Miami edition, taking place April 23rd to May 2nd, will be a great opportunity to watch 80+ films from around the world. Most of the films will be shown virtual, so you can watch them from home. There will also be three in person events. I encourage you to enjoy as many of the Festival’s films as possible with friends and family. Tickets to the OUTshine Miami edition films go on sale on Monday, March 29 at outshinefilm.com. After the Festival, you can continue watching LGBTQ+ Festival films through the new initiative OUTshine At Home. I am proud to support the Festival by being a member of the board of directors and the head of the marketing committee in a pro bono capacity. PHOTOS PROVIDED BY OUTSHINE FILM FESTIVAL

I sat down with OUTshine Film Festival Executive Director Victor Gimenez to discuss what we should expect from this year's Miami edition of the Festival. Rafa Carvajal: What are the highlights of this year's OUTshine Film Festival Miami edition? Victor Gimenez: Opening Night at the Dezerland Drive-In will be a highlight with our Opening Night Film Potato Dreams of America – which has a very JoJo Rabbit feel and humor. Also, we will be having a lot of virtual Q&As streamed on Facebook and our YouTube channel – OUTshine Film Festival. These are great because we will literally have filmmakers and actors located across the globe in the same broadcast studio. Another advantage to the virtual Q&As is they are not limited to an auditorium turnaround, and we can really go in depth with the talent. As always, the Miami Festival will have a strong international showing of films. As one of the first LGBTQ+ film festivals of the year, Miami is watched by other festivals for our programming prowess. RC: How can everyone purchase tickets to the Festival? VG: All tickets can be purchased on our website at outshinefilm.com RC: How will the Festival be different because of the COVID-19 pandemic? VG: COVID-19 has forced us to go virtual again this year with very limited physical presentations. Though this temporarily limits our capacity to gather as a community – one of the greatest strengths of the Festival – it is allowing us to show the films for longer periods of time and to a broader audience across the entire state of Florida. And as mentioned before, we will have greater filmmaker and talent involvement through the virtual Q&As.

18 WIREMAG.COM #3 2021

RC: Tell our readers about the Festival’s new OUTshine At Home initiative. VG: We are really excited by this. Basically, once Miami is concluded, the Festival will be offering 8-10 films per month. This will be a mixture of brand new films and older festival titles not available in the streaming services. It will allow our audience to always be engaged with us and discover incredible content. More importantly, it will allow us to expand our audience across our state. We will be marketing OUTshine At Home to all parts of

Florida – Orlando, Jacksonville, Naples, Tallahassee, etc. These communities will discover OUTshine, our films, and the virtual engagement we will create to "gather" together and meet each other. As important, when there is a sense of normalcy in 2022 and Miami is physical again, we will invite these communities to join us here in Miami next April – meet new people, make new friends, and enjoy the city. RC: What is the opening night film and why did OUTshine select it to open this year’s Festival? VG: The Opening Night Film is Potato Dreams of America. It's a semi autobiographical film about director Wes Hurley growing up in Russia and coming to the United States with his mail-order bride mother. It has a very JoJo Rabbit feel and sense of humor. We selected it for Opening because of that sense of humor. It's a great film, and it will leave you with a smile on your face. It's a film worth leaving the house, going to a Drive-In, and honking your horn for when it makes you smile and laugh. RC: What films are you most looking forward to this year and why?

VG: Opening of course, as well as the Closing Night Film Charlatan. Other highlights for me are Triple Threat, A Good Man, and the documentary Keyboard Fantasies. RC: What were the biggest challenges producing the Festival this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic? VG: Securing physical venues for the few we have, as well as finalizing the schedule. Though we are a year into this, securing the films is still up in the air in terms of what is being charged for screening fees, audience access, and screening platform being used. The filmmakers, distributors, and sales agents haven't settled into a common consensus on how to get their films out there or what the plans are. But in the end, we got it done and are proud of the program. RC: Is there anything else you’d like to share with Wire Magazine readers? VG: I think I say this every year. No matter who you are or what your journey has been, we have a film for you. Discover us online, join our email list at outshinefilm.com/athome, enjoy our Q&As, and sooner than you think we will meet in person.

BEYTO

Director: Gitta Gsell. Switzerland, 2021 Talented hunky swimmer, motivated apprentice and cool buddy Beyto is in the midst of life, with a bright future ahead of him. One would think. But when the only son of a Turkish migrant family falls in love with his coach Mike, an ideal world falls to pieces. In shock and ashamed, his parents only see one way out. Beyto must marry to save face and tradition, so they lure him to their home village to marry Seher, his childhood friend. Suddenly, Beyto finds himself in a disruptive love triangle: How can he get back to Mike without destroying Seher’s future? Beyto is a subtle, summerly sensuous love story about three young people caught in a situation none of them wanted, yet they all share.

POTATO DREAMS OF AMERICA

Director: Wes Hurley. U.S., 2021 Struggling to survive in the USSR during the turbulent years of Perestroika, Lena and her gay son Potato escape into the fantasy world of pirated American movies, but soon the movies are not enough and Elena decides to become a mail-order bride and discover America for herself. Soon after Lena marries a much older and very eccentric John, the mother and son find that they're in for a lot of surprises. Closely based on writer-director Wes Hurley's childhood, dark comedy Potato Dreams of America is one of those stories which proves that real life is often much stranger than fiction.

SAINT-NARCISSE

Director: Bruce LaBruce. Canada, 2020 Commencing with a crotch shot before launching into a rambunctious laundromat sex scene, Saint-Narcisse puts us on notice: Bruce LaBruce is going to take us for a ride. It’s 1972 in Montreal and gorgeous Dominic sates his narcissism by snapping Polaroid selfies and gazing longingly at his own hot and hunky reflection. When he learns that his birth mother is still alive, he embarks on a quest to find her, discovers her living with another woman, and also learns he has a twin brother Daniel who’s serving as a whipping boy-toy for a particularly depraved priest. Laying eyes on Daniel, Dominic can see the appeal. This occasionally twincestuous tale of doppelgängers, doppelbängers, and skewed family values will leave you reeling until the end. #3 2021 WIREMAG.COM 19
